An enthusiast rider is to be recognized by his , the need of adventure and the adrenaline to push the limits, seconded by the appropriate safety equipment and the skills to negotiate rough terrain.

Many would say that all you need to become a rider is a , the need of adventure and the adrenaline to push the limits. However, some would argue that it takes much more than that to become a long run professional (or amateur) racer. The list would include: safety equipment, basics and, last but not the least, the rules.

It must be pointed out from the very beginning that is a sport inherently dangerous. This is a fact that every mountain biker should be aware of. It is equally true that many of the enthusiasts who choose to join the “ club” are looking particularly for this sense of peril and the challenge represented by any new, unknown racing terrain. 1. The safety equipment should never be overlooked. Wear the helmet and the elbows and knees protections whenever you take a ride. Particularly when you are tackling an unfamiliar trail or when you participate to contests. Always, the safety equipment should be adequate to the riding conditions. That includes here, different types of bikes for different sections or trails.
  2. The speed must be adjusted to the riding conditions as well. The speed is one factor that can be controlled and which allows the rider to be in control of any unpredictable situations. Slow down the pace on trails that you are not familiar with. A lower speed allows the rider to avoid an obstacle on time.
  3. Some of the road driving rules are applicable in the as well. Bikers should always slow down for blind corners because you can never tell what is past them. Or even better, stop and take a better look, searching for possible challenges posed along the trail either by the natural terrain or man made.
  4. Take it easy! Start with riding less difficult trails and at lower speeds. There are always ways to practice the moves in less difficult conditions in order to develop the skills needed to negotiate rough terrain. Only when you are technically ready, you should commit yourself to more dangerous challenges.
